David was born in Nottingham and was an Open Exhibitioner in History, Peterhouse, University of Cambridge.

David volunteered for the R.A.F. in 1944 and served from 1945-1948, rising to the rank of Corporal. IN his working career David was a former Librarian of U.M.I.S.T., which no longer exists and a former Chairman of Salford Education Committee. He served as the Acting Chairman of Salford Health Authority and was a Member of Greater Manchester County Council.
