Lady Joyce Montgomery DL
Joyce was born in 1937 and educated in Newcastle-upon Tyne Church High School for Girls and Lady Mabel College of Physical Education, Sheffield. She remained in education for many years working as a Teacher in Physical Education at the Convent of Sacred Heart Grammar School, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and then as a lecturer at St Mary's College of Education, Newcastle-upon-Tyne before finally moving to Wolverhampton College of Education in 1972.
Interest in sports continued in the voluntary sector as Joyce became the Vice Chair of the North West Sports Council for Greater Manchester County Council and subsequently a Member of Manchester Airport Authority, a Founder Board Member of Manchester Museum of Science & Industry and a Member of Greater Manchester Police Committee. She was a Councillor, representing Timperley, on the Greater Manchester Council from 1975-1984.
In 1983 Joyce became a member of the Harvest Housing Group before being appointed the Group Board Chairman two years later; she also served as a Member of the Board of The Housing Corporation from 1987-97. During this same period Joyce became a Non-executive Director of the South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust and later a Consultant Advisor to the Board.
Joyce served as High Sheriff of the County of Greater Manchester from 2001-2002 and also was County President of St John Ambulance between 2002-2005. She is married to Sir Fergus Montgomery.
