It was a very cold Saturday in 2008 just before Remembrance Sunday.  The picture below shows the Lord-Lieutenant surrounded by a number of students who had travelled all the way from Nottingham University to take part in this year's Poppy Appeal.  This is a regular event for the student form Nottingham.  The Poppy Appeal is a major part of the fund raising that the 'Freshers', those in their first year at the university, do as part of their community work. Over the two Saturdays the students raised an impressive £20,946.89.

On the following Saturday the third year students, dressed in Evening Wear, collected on the streets of Manchester.  The Regional Royal British Legion Fund Raiser said 'these are a very committed group of young people whose efforts helped to raise £30 million last year.  We hope to do even better this year.

The picture to the left shows the Lord-Lieutenant fund raising in St Ann's Square in the city Centre.
